ZONER'S HOT STOVE: CUBS ROSTER MOVES

Well we can scratch Adam Greenberg off of my initial Cubs roster. From the AP:

Cubs add eight to 40-man roster

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs added eight
minor league players to their 40-man roster Friday and designated outfielder
Adam Greenberg for assignment. In his one game with the Cubs on July 9,
Greenberg was hit in the head by Florida's Valeiro de los Santos on the first
pitch he saw in the major leagues.

Greenberg, 24 and a ninth round pick of
the Cubs in 2002, spent the majority of the season at Double-A West Tenn,
where he hit .269 with 25 extra-base hits and 33 RBIs in 95 games.

Too bad. Nobody would assess him as a top prospect. But he has speed, he draws walks, he's left-handed and he was a Cubs draft pick. I guess he's no Jose Macias.

For some reason, this really bothers me. The kid gets a chance in the majors last year and gets hit in the head on the first and only pitch he see's. He spends the next month recouping from dizziness before playing winter ball. What a disappointment for him if he never makes it to the big leagues again. I'll be disappointed too.

Yes, and I really wasn't even looking at it at that level. But you're right.

But they did add Jae Kuk Ryu-- "The Bird Killer" to the 40 man.

Hey, but at least you'll be overpaying for Rafael Furcal soon, right? At this point, they're probably better off just resigning Nomar (for less) and trying to trade for Juan Pierre. I think they'd be better off. Poor Nomar. He'll be playing for the Royals before long.

When does Felix Pie become active on the Cubs roster? I remember reading about him back when I was in high school (2001). And he's still not in the bigs?

Pie was injured last year so that threw a wrench in things. It's a great question that I think no one knows the answer to, including Jim Hendry. If we gewt Juan Pierre that would help clear it up a bit.
