FANTASY FOOTBALL (GEEK) STORIES

Here is an e-mail that I just sent my lovely wife. This is pretty bad considering our 5th anniversary is approaching. Perhaps she'll think the subject line "Save the Date" has something to do with our plans for that weekend. But I didn't think of that until after I hit send. I was preoccupied with Cadillac Williams.

Subject: save the date!

...for my fantasy football draft. Wednesday, September 6th. Please ask for that night off from work.

I Love You!!!

A few years ago, I had my draft scheduled on the same day as an annual family reunion. As the date approached, I developed a fever, a cough and a bad cold. The deal was for me to go to the draft and then on to the reunion where I would meet my family.

Neither happened. I stayed home and did the draft from home via phone. As my wife was getting ready to go to the reunion she asked if I was going to come later. "I really doubt it.", I said.

She was slightly perturbed. "Well why not?"

"I'm sick. If I'm not going to my fantasy football draft you know I'm sick!"

She saw the logic and truth in that. My team sucked that year.

Do you have any fantasy football or sports stories about you and your loved ones? Bring them on. And make me laugh.

Five years ago, my wife was in a late-August wedding and we had the rehearsal dinner Friday night. Unfortunately, it coincided with my league draft, at a local watering hole, of course. After arguing, unsuccessfully, that I needed to be at the draft as opposed to a dinner with all her friends, our compromise was I could have the cell phone and call in my picks (before text-messaging was big, so that wasn't an option). The plan was good, the execution was poor. Turned out that I had no reception in the restaurant, so I had to go outside. And my draft spot was smack dab in the middle, so I wound up getting up and going outside pretty much every ten minutes for most of the night. Didn't make the wife very happy, though the other guys at my table thought it was hilarious and wanted updates every time!
The upshot of this is we now do the draft at McGee's near DePaul, and on a Saturday late morning, early afternoon. It's breakfast and bloodies for everyone, and wives are invited to come out to join in the drinking and eating (at another table, of course) and occasional shopping in the stores nearby while we're drafting away!

Inviting the ladies--isn't that breaking some sort of man-law?

Consider yourself on double-secret probation.

I thought bringing your significant other was definitely out of line for fantasy football drafts!! But yeah, I think we've all been in at least one situation where we had to either submit draft picks or finalize trades on a cell phone while at a couldn't-get-out-of-it event.

Well, Z, I hope that this isn't a "funny" fantasy football story. But we'll see.

In the middle of the season last year with bye weeks and injuries closing in on me, I traded my first-round pick for this coming season for Trent Green. It's a keeper league. We get to keep four. I'm keeping Tom Brady, Trent Green, LaDanian Tomlinson, and either Tiki Barber or Marvin Harrison.

How does that grab ya?
