MLB SURPRISES

One of the biggest surprises in my mind is Gary Matthews Jr. He's in the midst of quite a tear, going 23-52 over his last 11. For the year he is hitting .332/.389/.545 for an OPS of .934. He's on pace for 69 doubles and almost 100 RBI.

Among AL centerfielders, Matthews Jr. is 1st in average, 1st in OBP and 2nd in slugging behind Vernon Wells. He's also 2nd to Wells in OPS.

The Rangers have a nasty lineup. Adam Eaton, their big free agent acquisition over the winter, is reportedly going to be ready to go come the ASB. With John Koronka losing his magic dust of late, Eaton will boost a rotation that features Millwood, rookie John Rheinecker, Vincente Padilla and Kameron Loe. They could use another arm in the pen. But Texas is definitely that team that you don't want to face. Even if you take the series they wear out your pen.

Another surprise is Mike Mussina. He found the fountain of youth. It's great for the Yanks considering the Unit is getting shelled (15 HR allowed) and Moose is collecting $19 million this year.

He's 8-2 with a 2.76 ERA and a WHIP under 1. 85 Ks and only 16 BB. He's 1st in WHIP and IP and 3rd in BAA, only .218. He's dominating. And if you look at his numbers, he's on his way to the Hall of Fame.
