MOTHER OF THE YEAR

Why sure, it's not even March yet, but we may have the Mother of the Year.

Police: Mom left newborn outside casino
Tribune staff reports

A 24-year-old Indiana woman faces a criminal charge of child neglect after she allegedly left her 16-day-old infant and two other children in her car on one of the coldest days of the winter so far while she went into an East Chicago casino.

The baby girl required medical attention to be revived, authorities said. The air temperature at the time of the Sunday afternoon incident was 9 degrees, they said.

Keisha Lashae Clark, of Gary, was charged in connection with the incident at the Harrah's East Chicago Casino at 777 Harrahs Blvd. in the northwestern Indiana city, officials said.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Lake County, Ind., Superior Court, an East Chicago police officer responded about 1:30 p.m. to a report of small children in a parked car outside Harrah's casino. The officer said he discovered the baby and a 7-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl in the vehicle. The two older children appeared unharmed, but the baby was unresponsive. She was taken to St. Catherine Hospital, where she was revived and then released to Indiana Child Protective Services.

Clark returned to the vehicle and told police she had left her children in the vehicle for 20 minutes at most, and had gone into the casino to find their father "to get her money he was holding before he lost it all," the affidavit stated. The woman was arrested, charged with neglect of a dependent and assigned a $20,000 bond. If found guilty of neglect, she could be sentenced to up to three years in prison, according to the Lake County, Ind., prosecutor's office.
